MSXdev22 #17 SpaceCat

Title: SpaceCat
Genre: Platformer, lander
Author(s): Platty Soft
Medium: ROM 256KB
Hardware requirements: MSX1

From Platty Soft, the author of the book Modern MSX Basic Game Development, we received this brand new MSXdev22 entry. Originally released for Android phones way back in 2014, the author recreated the game for MSX1. It combines gameplay aspects of lander- as well as platform games, with accessible gameplay, and also features very cute and colorful graphics. All this makes this release serve as a fine demonstration of what a modern MSX Basic game can be like.

A lot of people like cats, and a great number among those even love them. So naturally, it’s only logical that quite some contributors to MSXdev, throughout the years, would be bound to be a card-carrying member of the league of furry fiend friends.
To name a few examples, there was Imanok’s Stray Cat, ray2day’s Litterbox, and ofcourse Landing by Z80 Epoch. To add to that list, we introduce SpaceCat.

In SpaceCat, you are a new student at the SpaceCat academy. Because, you see, in the year 3122, humankind has conquered space and has taken their favorite pets with them, which would ofcourse be cats. All this for a good reason – namely to hunt mice, as space is infested with those dirty rodents.Make it through the training deck, and you will be rewarded with an official certificate. With that, you can go into space as a SpaceCat pilot.

The gameplay and controls are fairy straight forward. Use the cursor keys to maneuver the cat’s flying saucer through space, catch the mice, and land safely on the next platform. Easy, right? Wrong! You’ll be screaming in frustration after failing again, and again. After all this is a training course. Don’t give up, you’ll get there… eventually.

MSXdev22 #16 Bufonada

Title: Bufonada
Genre: Adventure, Puzzle
Author(s): Roolandoo
Medium: ROM 48KB
Hardware requirements: MSX1, 16KB RAM

 MSXdev22 #16 Bufonada

Roolandoo, the creator of S.O.L.O. from last year’s MSXdev edition, performs an impressive hat-trick with Bufonada. A medieval adventure set in the kingdom of Kimeria, a nation stricken by a curse which casts eternal night over the land. Needless to mention that exiting mysteries to unravel are afoot.

Say! Did you ever wonder and ponder bout what your spirit animal would be? Something awesome and cool like, let’s say, a fire-breathing dragon, or a ferocious tiger, or maybe a penguin that can run at a top speed of 30 miles per hour? Come to think of it – maybe it’s not ours to pick ‘n’ choose what spirit animal was assigned to us by the gods, or whichever force balances and regulates life throughout the universe.

This bordeline existential sidetrip leads us to this year’s #16 entry. Because as for spirit animals, the protagonist of this game wasn’t very lucky. Even he, himself, expresses severe disappointment for it being… a goat. Yes, that’s right, a goat.

In this platformer, you’re to switch characters in order to exploit their typical perks. Both have their unique abilities as well as weaknesses, which the player will have to utilize in tandem in order to solve the obstacles that the game has to offer. So to say, a type of puzzle game that reminds of classics such as Lost Vikings or Gobliiins.

As the world in which this title takes place is ridden with the spell of “Eternal Night”, an artistic choice has been made by the author, to ensure a feeling of deep, perpetual darkness.

This MSX1 game comes in both English and Spanish language versions, as well as the accompanying manuals, which is a nice feat. On top of that, running it on MSX2, provides for an optimized color palette.

Advanced Horseshoe Magnet Simulator – Kempston Edition -ZX81-

Let us fast forward to 2004 and Jim Waterman decided to enter the Crap Games Competition with his first piece of ZX81 programming in 17 years. His Advanced Horseshoe Magnet Simulator for the ’81 was, by all accounts, crap.

Unless you suffer from short term memory issues[3], you’ll remember that the title of this review is suspiciously similar. Advanced Horseshoe Magnet Simulator for the zx81 again – but this it is the Kempston Edition!

Frantic Pengo 2- ZX Spectrum-

MSXdev22 #15 Memory

 MSXdev22 #15 Memory

Title: Memory
Genre: Puzzle
Author(s): Jipe MSXvillage
Medium: ROM/DSK 128KB/360KB
Hardware requirements: MSX2, FDD (optional)

A multiplayer game by Jipe, Memory for MSX2 challenges you to match identical images in a field of cards displaying different images.

Perhaps the most basic game for young and old, is the game Memory – also known as Concentration Card Game or Matching Game. It’s as simple as matching all the pairs of identical cards. It requires you to remember the location of cards you’ve seen earlier. For MSXdev22, French-man Jipe recreated this game on the MSX2.

The game features an easy and a hard mode and can be played with either keyboard or joystick/gamepad. Maneuver the cursor over the playfield, then use space or fire to select two cards. When they’re identical, you score a point. The game is presented on both disk and ROM, so you can choose your preferred format.
