Tome of the Dead -ZX Spectrum-

 by alstepan

The Tome of the Dead lies in the Sanctum beneath eight dark depths, and it hurts all who stand near it. There is no way back up and no saving. Find the key, unlock each lair, slay its boss, and take the grate down.

Tome of the Dead is a turn-based, side-view dungeon crawler for the ZX Spectrum 128K, written entirely in Z80 assembly by AI agents (agentic development, directed and reviewed by the author). Pick a Warrior or a Mage, descend through procedurally generated depths, and see how far you get. Death is permanent.

What you get

  • Two classes. The Warrior fights with sword, throwing daggers, a bow found on depth 2, and mana-fuelled power attacks. The Mage fights with a staff and five spells: Spark, Firebolt, Frost Shard, Drain Life and Lightning.
  • Procedural level generation. All eight depths are generated anew every run from a 3x3 grid of rooms, with doors, ladders, pits you can jump, and traps you can search for.
  • A boss on every depth. Each guards a lair and a locked grate. Kill it to open the way down. Each drops a unique treasure, from the Goblin King's Helm on depth 1 to the Mirror Helm of the Death Knight on depth 7.
  • A final fight. On depth 8 you must slay the Necromancer Archmage, then destroy the Tome itself before its aura destroys you.
  • A varied bestiary. Rats, bats, slimes, goblins, spiders, skeletons, vampires, ghosts, orcs, archers, mummies, necromancers, an Ogre Warlord and a Death Knight, plus the Archmage.
  • Items and gear. Potions, scrolls, food, skill and spell books, weapons, armour, helmets, rings and amulets. Hunger, poison, fear, confusion and other status effects all matter.
  • XP and levels, and books that teach or strengthen your abilities.
  • AY-3-8912 music and sound effects (128K sound chip), with switchable sound options: all on, effects only, or off.
  • Full joystick support. Kempston, Sinclair 1 and Sinclair 2 are supported, or use the keyboard with fully redefinable keys.
  • A built-in how-to-play screen on first start.
