This port was created especially for ByteFest 2026, a gathering of vintage computer enthusiasts held in the Czech Republic.
ByteFest is an annual meeting of vintage computer users and fans in Prague. It brings together machines and people from the worlds of the ZX Spectrum, Atari, Amiga, Commodore, Sharp, Amstrad CPC, PMD 85, MSX and many other platforms. The event aims to unite retro-computing enthusiasts, give them a place to exchange knowledge and form new friendships, and introduce the history of computing to the general public and younger generations.
ByteFest 2026 takes place from September 25 to September 28, 2026, at Toulcův dvůr in Prague 10 – Hostivař, Czech Republic.
About the game
L'Abbaye des Morts is a port of the classic independent game created by Locomalito in 2010. The original was designed as a tribute to 8-bit ZX Spectrum games and was inspired by titles such as Manic Miner, Jet Set Willy and Dynamite Dan. This version brings its gameplay, rooms, enemies, music and unsettling atmosphere to the ZX Spectrum Next.
It is a non-linear exploration platformer for one player. You will face 23 interconnected screens, precise jumps, deadly traps, enemies and environmental puzzles. Jean has no weapon – his only choices are to run, hide and rely on his faith.
The story
In the 13th century, the Cathars, who preached a life without material possessions and worldly aspirations, were persecuted by the Catholic Church and driven out of the Languedoc region of France.
One of them, Jean Raymond, is fleeing from the crusaders when he finds shelter in an old abandoned church. Its safety is only an illusion. Beneath the ruins of the abbey lies a much older and more dangerous secret.
Explore the abbey and the passages beneath it, read the clues written on scattered parchments and uncover what is hidden in its depths. Can you escape your pursuers and survive the evil waiting below the church?
Your objective
Find all twelve lost Cathar crosses and uncover the dark secret of the abbey. The journey is not linear: you will revisit previously explored rooms, search for hidden routes, activate mechanisms and use information found on parchments.
- Collect all 12 Cathar crosses.
- Avoid crusaders, monsters, fire, water and other deadly hazards.
- Find hearts to recover lost lives.
- Activate checkpoints and solve the mechanisms hidden throughout the abbey.
- Use the parchments to discover clues needed to complete the game.
