Taking a nostalgic trip back to the eighties, we revisit the iconic digital watch and its software. The dev entry GS Soccer originated on that platform and brings a smile as it remains true to the charm of the o.g.
Italian game creator Fausto Pracek joins the dev show with his latest title, GS Soccer. While the word “Soccer” might be familiar – yes, that sport where athletes chase a ball across a grassy field, fully clothed of course – the “GS” part could use a bit of explanation.
The “GS” refers to the model number of a digital watch made by Casio. This game is actually a port of the soccer video game that was featured on Casio watches (model GS-11) back in the 1980s. The author intentionally left out music to remain as true as possible to the spirit of the original game. However, unlike the original watch version, the MSX edition allows two players to compete against each other, making the match more fun and engaging.
Each match lasts 60 seconds. When playing against the computer, the white team is used; otherwise, each player controls their own team. The game is reminiscent of the Nintendo Game & Watch series, showing a playfield with preset player positions. Simple but addictive.
